The construction industry is facing a fundamental transformation. Large companies are better equipped for the digital transformation. However, 97% of trade businesses in Germany have fewer than 50 employees and correspondingly fewer resources. This is where Meisterwerk comes in and wants to lay the foundation for the digitalization of small and medium-sized trade businesses.
Visions of the future
If you Google digitization in construction today, the search engine spits out exciting articles. It's all about 5D construction models, drones and robots. The future prospects that McKinsey, Roland Berger and others predict for the construction industry seem futuristic.
Above all, it's about big players - huge construction projects and large corporations. The consensus is that the construction industry is lagging behind. Comparisons are drawn with other industries. For example, the automotive industry, where manufacturing is decentralized and automated. Where supply chain management knows at all times how much of which part is needed and where it will be installed. Suppliers are networked and integrated into the procurement system.
The construction industry has a lot of catching up to do
But the trades working in construction are still miles away from this. As long as paper plans and all kinds of paperwork are used, the susceptibility to errors is high and efficiency rather low. Between the office and the construction site, as well as the trades working together on the site, information circulates sometimes more, sometimes less fluidly. Time delays, misunderstandings and inconsistencies are the result. Productivity suffers as a result. "In the past ten years, productivity in Germany has increased by only a modest 4 percent. By comparison, the German economy as a whole improved its productivity by 11 percent during this period, the manufacturing sector by as much as 34 percent, and the production industry by 27 percent."
Low productivity also means less profitability, as the following diagram shows:
The fundamental change
No one would have to reinvent the necessary technologies. What stands in the way of a completely digitised and networked planning and construction process? It's not just about digital tools, but about rethinking. A transformation: structures, ways of working and mindset. At all levels: From the client to the architect to the construction worker.
The small and medium-sized craft enterprises
Meisterwerk is primarily concerned with the latter, the small and medium-sized companies in the construction industry. In Germany, that's around 620,000. Across Europe, around 3.2 million. "For tradesmen today, it's all about the basics: planning, coordination and information exchange," says Bertram Wildenauer, CEO of Meisterwerk, explaining the startup's mission. Meisterwerk's cloud-based application is designed to close this gap, reduce costs, motivate employees and increase overall efficiency. In this way, Meisterwerk wants to lay the foundation for the digital transformation that the construction industry is facing, together with the trade businesses.

Future perspectives for the construction industry forecasted by McKinsey, Roland Berger and others appear to be almost futuristic.
Primarily of course, we are talking about the big players - huge construction projects and large corporations. All agree that the construction industry is somewhat lagging behind. Where the supply chain management always knows how many from whichever parts are needed and will be mounted. Suppliers are interlinked and integrated in the procurement system.

But the trades in the construction business are miles away from that. As long as they put their plans on paper and use little pieces of paper in their everyday work routines, error rates will be high while prospects of efficiency will be rather poor. Information circulation between office and construction site as well as the different trade team working on site will not be effective. The result are time delays, misunderstandings and discrepancies and productivity is sure to suffer. It's not only a matter of digital tools, it's important to rethink. Go for the transformation: structures, working methods and approach.
